THE IMPORTANCE OF PLAY IN ADULTHOOD
by Michelle Gaudet
»
Is there a time more wistful and nostalgic than days spent playing as a child ? As you ran around your neighbourhood and made up complex storylines for toys , the summer days blended together and time passed in a blink .
Free , unstructured playtime is how children discover the world and develop important social and cognitive skills . When we are younger , playtime is a time of discovery and aimlessness . We are encouraged to play , to learn new skills , discover passions , and practice socializing . Somewhere between our adolescence and adulthood , we stop playing . Whether we find fewer opportunities to let loose , or perhaps less societal approval to do so , adult responsibilities and achievement take over .
We are well-aware that play is an important part of a healthy child ’ s development , but research is now showing that adults also have a lot to gain from playing . From our relationships to relaxation to resourcefulness , evidence shows that adding playtime back into our lives can have far-reaching benefits .
During childhood , kids learn about verbal communication , body language , boundaries , cooperation and teamwork through playtime . Not surprisingly , adults can continue to refine these skills through play as well . Engaging in playful activities has been shown to optimize learning and resourcefulness when solving problems . Play enhances our connections with others through cooperation and communication . It can add joy to life while relieving stress , fueling your emotional well-being .
