WOMEN'S STATEWIDE CUP
TAROONA
FC
Taroona FC will go in this game as the underdog, a tag they may not mind supporting for the time being.
It was the underdog Clarence United last year who came from behind twice to knock Taroona FC out in the semi finals and eventually win the final against Olympia.
A lot has changed for Taroona since that match with the side only carrying five players who featured in last year’s match.
Taroona are going through a rebuilding phase and many around the Women’s game continue to comment on their new squad, this hasn’t been missed by Assistant Coach John Meehan.
“This week’s game will be difficult for us but we are keen to make up for last year. We lost concentration during extra time and panicked which we can't afford to do again against a squad like Clarence as they will make us pay.
"I think many are focusing on the players that are missing from the squad (granted, they are big losses) without looking at the players we have managed to build the squad around. We didn't plan on the squad hitting its straps until late March due to the changes we've had in both playing and coaching personnel.”
The Women’s game seems to throw a number of surprises up in the Cup every year. Manager Dale Crocker believes that one of Clarence’s strength is their ability to pull together as a team and its tight defence which has been hard to break down so far this year.
“CUFC have a strong sense of team and all our players are loyal, committed and determined to play the best they can. While each player will have a role to play, it’s our team work which will be the key to success.
"The girls have been training hard and many of them also participated in a team building camp over the weekend. We also have a very strong defence line up.”
