University SC secured a relatively easy victory over New Town Eagles on Saturday to progress through for an interesting Round of 16 encounter against Glenorchy Knights on March 22.

University played the better of the football from the outset with width and penetration being their ally. While Eagles avenues towards goal were either through Jamie Vernon or beyond the University defence.

The home side hit the lead in the 12th minute and never looked back. A dangerous free kick whipped in by Phineas Aldridge skimmed off the top of Eagles defender Michael Anderson and past the helpless Adam Bates in goals.

Five minutes later what would have been the goal of the game after a nice build up and through ball by Ronald John was ruled offside as George Kamano mistimed his run, though finished the play with a nice strike into the back of the net.

The game then turned for the worst for Eagles as a strong challenge by University’s Toby MacGregor on Jamie Vernon saw the Eagles play maker come off second best and have to leave the field.

After Vernon’s departure Eagles never looked like threatening University and the middle of the pitch became a free for all as University ran amuck.

Kamano had a number of chances to give University a larger lead going into half time but was unable to capatalise on good positioning.

It was man of the match Ronald John who extended University’s lead before the break with a bullet which gave Bates no chance.
