The Globus Museum of the Austrian
National Library is located in the
magnificent Mollár Palace and is
unique in the world. Discover more
than 250 exhibits, including exclusive
terrestrial and celestial globes,
globes of the moon and other
planets, as well as numerous
astronomical instruments.
The museum was founded in 1956 on
the basis of a collection of globes of
the imperial family. Geographer
Eugen Oberhammer, conducting an
inventory in 1921, discovered eight
globes of various sizes, as well as two
armillary spheres. By 1922 the globes
were moved to the Geographical
Assembly, where in 1948 their
number was increased to 28 pieces.
In the same year, the meeting
director noted in his report that
globes are rarely used for their
intended purpose. Probably, it was
then that the idea arose to create a
museum.
