The Modern Museum collects , preserves ,
communicates and displays modern and
contemporary art . In 1958 , the museum was
inaugurated when modern art from the
beginning of the 20th century and
photographs from 1840 onwards , were moved
from the National Museum to a former military
exercise hall at Skeppsholmen in Stockholm .
The current museum building was completed
in 1998 , side by side with the old museum , and
was designed by Spanish architect Rafael
Moneo . Since 2009 , Moderna Museet is also
located in Malmö .
The Modern Museum is one of the world ' s
leading museums for modern and
contemporary art . The vision for the museum
is to continue to work in the spirit of openness
and experimental desire that has always been
the museum ' s signature . The presence of art
and artists is of the utmost importance , as is
the dialogue with an actively participating
audience . By developing this interaction , a
museum is built for the future .
