The unique toy collection displayed here in the
Bergrummet is managed and owned by David von
Schinkel who took it over after his father Carl - David
von Schinkel . The collection consists of nearly 40 , 000
items making it the largest collection of toys in
Northern Europe . Carl - David von Schinkel was
pioneering when he opened Tidö Castle to the public
in 1974 and inaugurated Tidö Toy Museum in some of
the castle ' s historic halls . Historically , castles and
mansions had been closed . The opening of Tidö Toy
Museum came to be a success and was inaugurated
by King Carl XVI Gustaf . After 35 years , his son David
decided that he wanted to develop the museum with
a new design , and that for practical reasons it would
be moved to a 1200 sqm large stone barn adjacent to
the castle . With the help of designers and craftsmen
from the Dramaten , Operan , SVT , Statsteatern and
Kulturhuset , among others , the museum in Stenstallet
was reopened in 2010 .
The museum in Stenstallet became a very popular
excursion destination , but after a few years visitors
noticed that it was difficult to get out to the country
to visit Tidö . In 2016 , David receives a phone call that
became the beginning of a new era for the museum
and the collection . It was a call from an elderly lady ,
living in central Västerås , who clearly explains that
she wanted to visit the museum , but that it is now
both easier and cheaper for her to make the 7 miles
to Stockholm than to travel the short distance on 1 , 5
km from Västerås to Tidö Castle . After that
conversation , David decided that he would work to
make the museum and collection accessible to more
visitors . It would have been easiest to move into
central Västerås , although if you wanted to reach
even more people , it might be best to listen to the
old lady and aim for Stockholm instead ?
