You should definitely visit the most important
evidence of early baroque architecture
( consecration : 1629 ) in the region - the Church
of the Apostle Andrew .
The Church of the Apostle Andrew is located
in the heart of the old city of Düsseldorf -
along with the Hofkirche in Neuburg . It was
created at the suggestion of 1619 Jesuits , who
were invited to Düsseldorf . Under the Duke
Wolfgang Wilhelm of the House Palatinate
Neuburg , the church was built in the middle
of the Thirty Years War in a very short time
( 1622 - 1629 ). Until the collapse of the Jesuit
Order in 1773 , it remained a monastic church ;
Finally , in 1842 , it became the parish church .
In 1972 , the Dominicans relocated their
Düsseldorf women ' s monastery from
Herzogstrasse to the old city and have since
taken over the pastoral care of St . Andrew ’ s
Church . Today , the owner of the Andreaskirche
is the state of North Rhine - Westphalia .
Inside the church of the Apostle Andrew is
richly decorated . In the church , statues of life -
sized twelve apostles , evangelists , various
saints and Jesuit Order figures were installed .
The baroque altar was destroyed during the
Second World War . In 1959 – 1960 , the sculptor
Ewald Matare created a new altar with a
three - stage platform , a tabernacle , and two
white marble staircases .
