The Renaissance building from the end of the 16th century is located right on the old market square . With its beautiful facade and tower , it resembles a small castle . Among other things , a new town hall and additional administrative buildings were added , so now the building consists of five wings and extends to the banks of the Rhine . Even today it serves as the seat of the city council and municipal administration of Düsseldorf . Thanks to the carnival , this famous construction has long been known outside the country . Right in front of the town hall , in the middle of the square , is the famous equestrian monument dedicated to the elector Jan Velleme .
