AUGUSTUSSTRASSE 1
The famous 100 - meter panel depicting the procession of princes of a thousand - year - old Saxon dynasty of
the ruling house of the Wettin is located on the outer wall of the so - called Long Gallery of the Dresden
residence castle .
The procession of princes was originally painted in 1589 with lime colors . To the 800th anniversary of the
dynasty in 1879 , the artist Wilhelm Walter created a new panel in sgrafitto technique . Due to the poor
weather resistance of the image made in this technique , in 1907 it was replaced by a copy , made of
Meissen porcelain tiles without seams .
The panel miraculously survived during the bombings of 1945 , out of 25 , 000 tiles , only 200 had to be
replaced . In 1980 , restoration was carried out .
In total in a picture 94 persons are represented . Of these , 35 marquises , dukes , electors , kings of Saxony ,
59 artists , scientists , peasants , artisans , children , as well as many horses and two greyhounds dogs .
The procession opens retinue of the founder of the dynasty of Conrad the Great . Behind her is Conrad the
Great , who ruled Saxony from 1127 to 1156 . And then all the other Saxon rulers in order . One of the most
famous and revered Saxon rulers Augustus II the Strong . King of Saxony from 1694 to 1733 . In 1697 he was
also elected king of Poland . He was an ally of Peter I in the Northern War against Sweden . The
penultimate king of the dynasty George , who ruled Saxony until 1904 , closes the procession of rulers . The
last king of the dynasty Frederick Augustus III , who headed the throne until 1918 , did not hit the panel ,
because at the time of its creation he was still a child .
