Humanizing AI Will Help Achieve More From The Disruptive Technology

Artificial Intelligence ( AI ) - an area in computer science that develops machines with the ability to perform human-like tasks through automated decision making , learning , and recognition - brings with it significant promises that have the potential of transforming the economy of every country in Africa .
In today ’ s digital age , adoption of AI has the potential of solving most pervasive problems such as poverty , education , diseases , healthcare , and food supply . It has significant benefits that can be leveraged to solve most prevalent problems that cut across various sectors of the economy .
Various countries around the world are at different stages and levels in terms of preparedness to embrace AI , as is evident by the Government AI Readiness Index , produced annually by Oxford Insights . The first edition of this index was published in 2017 , then took a one-year hiatus before resumption in 2019 and 2020 .
This Index examines the key question of whether a given government is ready to implement AI in the delivery of public services to citizens . To do so , the index for 2021 bases its scores on ten ( 10 ) dimensions , grouped under three pillars upon which AI readiness is measured are Government ; Technology Sector ; and Data and Infrastructure .
As innovations around AI technologies continue to emerge , AI and Generative ( GenAI ) are disrupting technology markets at an accelerated pace and will enable tech providers to succeed or fail in the next five years .
This calls for governments and businesses to evaluate benefits and risks for various AI technologies to gain competitive advantages and deliver value for their populations .
According to a recent Gartner report , Emerging Tech Impact Radar : Artificial Intelligence , Artificial Intelligence as a Service ( AlaaS ) offerings are growing in demand , including solutions like AI TRiSM ( Trust , Risk , and Security Management ), hallucination management , provenance detectors , responsible AI , and sustainable AI .
The most valuable data of all is real human data , which tells us about who we are , how we live our lives , and what we need to make us safe , comfortable , healthy , and happy . We buy because we are humans . We have needs , insecurities , and care what others think of us . AI applications in market research that fail to capture the true essence of being human will not perform well .
The report released in January 2024 , shows increasing AI trust ( model , data , and outcomes ) and regulatory pressures , as well as security concerns , will require all technology providers to navigate the rapidly evolving market .
Another key finding is increasing levels of human augmentation and automation enabled by AI and GenAI that are drawing attention to the significance of data , analytics techniques , and decision intelligence .
The report also indicates that by 2026 , single-modality AI will lose out to multimodal AI models ( text , image , audio , and video ) in more than 60 % of GenAI solutions up from less than 1 % in 2023 .
It further reveals opportunistic and unregulated use of generative AI technologies in rapidly introducing numerous apps and platforms suitable for creation of deepfakes by nonexperts due to the technology ’ s accessibility .
Kenya , as many countries in Africa , is taking bold steps to cope with the rapidly changing landscape induced by AI development . The country is already harnessing AI technology to address critical needs in agriculture , healthcare , education , and financial services , through a combination of strategic governmentled initiatives , a thriving tech , start-up and private sector ecosystem , innovative partnerships , as well as a vibrant civil society .
