Red Bull KTM Factory Racing ’ s Manuel Lettenbichler was one of the clear favorites coming into the competition , having won the previous two editions in 2020 and 2021 . With Billy Bolt out due to injury , this also left Lettenbichler an opportunity to take the lead in the series championship . The KTM rider had an impressive start , taking a solid third-place finish in the wooden-obstacle prologue in downtown Sibiu , a city in Transylvania , in central Romania . This positioned him to be the first rider off the start on Offroad Day One due to the order of the top three being reversed . However , this is when tragedy struck . Clutch issues that required some outside assistance to fix left him with a two-hour time penalty at the end of the day , dropping him down to 17th place and destroying any hopes of seeing that top box .
But all was not lost , and championship points were still on the line . After sorting out the mechanical issues , Lettenbichler came back with a vengeance , setting the fastest time on day two and day four to cross the finish line in sixth place .
