Understanding the Appointments System

This month the PPG is giving extra information on the appointments system at Larksfield Practice. In particular, a significant number of people need more information about booking appointments online. Firstly interested patients need to register at Reception. Unfortunately you cannot register on-line as the practice needs to verify that login details are being given to the correct person and relate to the correct patient record. You will be given a username and password to access SystmOnline the web based service( via the Appointments Icon on the Larksfield website Home page). Later, if you wish, you can change your password for something easier to remember. Once on-line, you will be able to see directly what appointments are available for which doctors up to 6 weeks in advance. You can then chose what times are suitable for you. Unfortunately, it is not possible to book double appointments even if you feel your issues are complex.
With regard to getting an appointment with a doctor who is an expert in any given condition, all GPs are by definition general practitioners of medicine. However, if you are confident that you need to discuss minor surgery with a doctor please ask to see Dr Southall, or if it is a question of contraceptive devices or implants please ask to see Dr Chaudhury. In addition, the Larksfield web site or receptionist will be able to tell you about various‘ Minor illnesses’ that can be dealt with better, and often more quickly, by the experienced Specialist Nurses. There are many conditions that are routinely dealt with by these nurses who also run the chronic disease management clinics.
Some patients question whether seeing the doctor is the best way to deal with their issue. The receptionist will be able to give you advice with regard to this. It may be better to speak to your

pharmacist or see the minor illness nurse. However, if you need advice or to see a doctor outside of surgery hours you can always telephone the‘ Out of Hours’ service on 0845 601 0244 to discuss your problem or make an appointment( The out-of-hours service is commissioned by Bedfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group). However, please remember that you can get general advice by telephoning 111 when you need medical help fast, or emergency help by dialing 999.
If you are in full time work it is obviously difficult for you to get to the surgery during working hours. The Practice recognises this and at the current time there are three early morning surgeries 7.00 to 8.00am Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and two late evening surgeries 6.30 to 8.00pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays. All extended hours appointments must be pre-booked.
Although the practice tries to make sure that you see the doctor of your choice, it is only possible to book an appointment with a particular doctor or at a specific time if there is one still available on the booking system.
Finally, if you no longer need to see a doctor, please do remember to cancel your appointment by telephone, in person, in writing or by clicking the SystmOnline link on the home page.

Closed for training
