Nature seems to think Spring is just round the corner, but anything could happen in the next couple of months. Old Moat Reserve – Christmas was celebrated in traditional style – our thanks to Rita Page for the delicious mince pies, and to our new Chairman Saul who tempted us with hot mulled wine. Coppicing in the south wood is now well under way, providing a good training ground for our new volunteers (whose numbers continue to increase!). Another section of hedge laying has also been started, harvesting poles and heatherings from around the reserve. With 8 or more volunteers at each session now, I have ordered another 2 small bow saws, and considering another 2 loppers. And with all that equipment, we have really benefitted from Karl’s trailer, which he has fitted with a front wheel and tow bar, making it easy to take down to the Old Moat. Future Work Parties scheduled as follows: March 2nd, 16th, and 30th. Contact Roger Watson if you are interested in coming along. Glebe Meadows – The middle dividing hedge has now been completely cut back. Andy Fleckney returned for another bonfire, but also took down the large Sycamore by the ditch outflow, and put in several stakes to reinforce the riverside fencing. We are now making good progress cutting back the final section of railway hedge, which is all adding to our already large woodpile by the river. Work Parties most Wednesday mornings – contact Karl Griffiths. As with the Old Moat, our busy time is October through to March. Footpaths / Pix Green – I am pleased to announce that Vic Williams is setting up a Friday morning work party, with Richard Harris and Dave Whittaker as founding members. I have suggested that they should concentrate initially on the footpath network, as that probably gets the least attention, and we haven’t had a proper footpath survey in a while. Depending on what they find needs doing, we can rope in extra help as required. Roger Watson 22/01/2014 St. Peter’s Church St.Peter’s Church The Big Quiz Friday 21st March.
