the crown
Arlesey was at one time blessed with around twenty public houses, with quite
a few being frequented by workers at the brick yards. Most of the pubs have
long since closed down and only 4 now remain.
One very popular hostelry was the Crown in the High Street which opened
its doors in 1863. The pub had its own football team and at one stage hosted
the Arlesey Town Band.
It was also one of the pubs used a ‘beer-stop’ in the annual pram race,
which was held every September through the village.
The Crown closed in the late 1980’s, and the site is now part of a new
development of flats called Crown Lodge. The two images, below and top
right, are from the collection of postcards from Doreen Rix they both show the
Crown on the left of each postcard.
The two pictures below were lent to us by Bob Clark who ran the pub for
many years before it closed. The first picture was taken from a window across
the road just before it was demolished. The picture below was taken, from the
same place, after demolition as a portacabin was being delivered. The lorry
toppled over as the cabin was being moved into position.
