SHAPE THE FUTURE BURSARY CAMPAIGN
Every donation made to our bursary programme is more than just a gift- it’ s an investment in a young person’ s future. Thanks to your generosity, students who may not have otherwise had the opportunity are able to thrive, grow, and reach their full potential within our school community.
Your support doesn’ t just change the lives of individuals- it strengthens our entire school by making it more diverse, inclusive, and vibrant. Bursaries open doors to exceptional teaching, lasting friendships, and transformative experiences that stay with our pupils for life.
We’ d like to share some feedback directly from the students and families whose lives have been touched by your kindness. Their words are heartfelt expressions of gratitude, and a powerful reminder of the real and lasting impact your support provides.
On behalf of the entire school community- thank you.
“ When life threw our family a curve ball, Pocklington School became the constant in our son’ s life. Bursary provision allowed him to continue accessing ongoing and unwavering support within a nurturing and familiar environment. A number of staff have become critical role models for my son and have assisted him to develop into the young man I know his father would have been proud of.”
“ This year Pocklington School gave me many opportunities such as participating in house drama, contributing to charity by taking part in charity week sales, taking part in Young Enterprise Business Tycoon and being able to study my favourite subjects and take part in my favourite sports. I am proud of this as it helped me with my personal growth as well as intellectual growth. I became more responsible and committed as everything listed above included a lot of my independent work that I needed to achieve even better results.”
“ Thank you so much, your financial contributions don’ t just ease the burden of education- they open doors. I am incredibly grateful and I would like you to know that Pocklington School really changed my life; it opened my mind and changed my views on life a lot. I’ m truly grateful to be part of a school that encourages ambition and nurtures character. Because of you, I am able to pursue my life goals with greater focus, support and peace of mind. Thank you so much for believing in the potential of students like me.”

JOHN DOLMAN SOCIETY UPDATE
FROM ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT: THE IMPACT OF LEGACIES AT POCKLINGTON
Since its foundation in 1514 by John Dolman, Pocklington School has thrived thanks in part to a proud tradition of philanthropy. Dolman’ s vision – to provide opportunity through education – continues to inspire the School’ s mission today. Over the centuries, generous alumni, parents, colleagues, and friends have remembered Pocklington in their wills, ensuring future generations can benefit from the same transformative education they once received.
These legacy gifts have helped open doors to students from all walks of life, particularly those for whom a Pocklington education would otherwise be out of reach. From bursaries and scholarships to new facilities and enriched pastoral care, legacies have left a profound and lasting impact.
Most recently, the School has benefited from several generous legacy gifts, including one significant donation in excess of £ 500k. These contributions have been directed to the Shape The Future bursary fund, helping to grow the endowment and increase the number of bursary places available to young people who would not otherwise have the means to attend Pocklington.
While financial legacies – such as specific sums of money, stocks and shares, or trusts – are common, other forms of giving are equally meaningful. A recent example is the generous bequest from the estate of the late Richard Stubbs( 1957 – 67), a former pupil and passionate musician. His widow, Sue, arranged the donation of high-quality musical instruments, accessories, and books to the School’ s Music Department.
The bequest, which included guitars, banjos, and a ukulele, has already made a tangible impact. Pocklington’ s Director of Music, Samuel Austin, shared:“ These instruments are in excellent condition and have brought a real sense of excitement to our department. It’ s wonderful to see students so inspired, especially the guitarists- one of our Music Scholars couldn’ t wait to start playing!”
In addition to the musical donation, Mrs Stubbs also sent in a collection of sports team photographs from her husband’ s time at the school. These have been passed to the School’ s volunteer archivist for cataloguing and inclusion in the sports archive collection.
External Relations Director, Sheena McNamee, added:“ We are grateful to Richard for remembering the School in this way and helping to inspire current and future generations of students through his love of music and his connection with Pocklington.”
