OP CRICKET 2024
The annual cricket match between Pocklington School and OPs was a delight to witness , and to top it off , the weather was perfectly co-operative too !
OPs 251 - 7 off 40 overs ( Harry Falkingham 3 - 23 ) Pocklington 1st XI 172 all out ( Ollie Rook 64 , George Moorhouse 20 )
It was fantastic to welcome so many recent leavers back for the annual OP cricket match which provided much entertainment throughout the day for players and spectators alike .
A masterclass of perfect clean hitting by Harry Jackson ( 15-22 ) who completed his century in 43 balls , ultimately took the total out of reach of the school . Having survived several “ chances ” early in his innings he made the boys pay dearly and dominated the attack throughout .
In reply , school captain , Ollie Rook compiled a powerful 64 before being dismissed by an outstanding catch by Harry Matthews ( 15-20 ) which ultimately ended any hopes of the school chasing the total down .
It was a wonderful game , played in great spirit across both teams under beautiful blue skies – we shall look forward to the return fixture next year ! Thank you to all those involved .

BIRKDALE BUCKET TRIUMPH FOR OP GOLF TEAM
OPs triumphed in this year ’ s Birkdale Bucket golf tournament which sees teams of former pupils from several independent schools compete for the unique ‘ bucket ’ trophy .
In difficult conditions due to strong cross-winds and fast-paced greens on Woodhall Spa ’ s challenging Hotchkin Course , the OP golf team played well to win the coveted Birkdale Bucket .
The event is an annual competition played between former pupils of ‘ Northern ’ schools namely Oundle , Stowe , Sedburgh , Giggleswick , Uppingham , Wrekin , Worksop , and Pocklington , and has been running for over 60 years !
Trevor commented : “ We didn ’ t think this would be enough to win , so were absolutely delighted when the scores were read out and our 134 total was 3 better than runners-up Worksop !”
The win was Pocklington ’ s ninth in the competition ’ s history but the first since 2018 and a welcome return to form after a harsh wooden spoon last year . With the best 4 Stableford scores to count , Bruce and Tim came in with 34 points , and David & Trevor with 33 points .
Trevor said : “ It would be great to see even more OP golfers helping us to defend the trophy in a year ’ s time . It is a handicap competition to suit all abilities , so if there are any OP golfers out there who would like to give it a go and join the team , please contact Rachel in the OP office to register your interest .”
Pictured immediately after the trophy presentation , is the successful team of ( L-R ) David Harrison ( 70-77 ), Trevor Loten ( 70-80 ), Bruce East ( 73-80 ), Mike Strong ( captain , 66-76 ), Tim Russell ( 68-78 ), Larry Lawson ( 70-77 ), and Alex Lewis ( 85-94 ).
GOLF AT GANTON 2024
The fourth annual golf match between Old Hymerians and Old Pocklingtonians took place on a beautiful afternoon at the superb Ganton GC on Wednesday 14th August 2024 .
Playing for the Friendship Trophy , each team is comprised of 4 pairs , with a “ betterball ” format . The OP team was David Harrison ( 70-77 ) & Trevor Loten ( 70-80 ), Tim Murden ( 83-90 ) & Ed Heppel ( 88-99 ), Larry Lawson ( 70-77 ) & Mark Addison ( Acting Captain , 69-76 ), and Richard Brown ( 82-87 ) & Denton Guest ( 69-74 ).
All but one match was remarkably close , going down to the 18th hole , but ( sadly from an OP perspective ) only Lawson & Addison came away with a halfpoint , as the OH team triumphed 3.5-0.5 to win the trophy outright following last year ’ s draw .
Thank you to everyone who took part .
