THE OJCL TORCH: WINTER EDITION 9
3. Catullus 85
The classic “confused-but-in-love-but-not-really” poem. Who hasn’t been able to relate to the frustrated, passionate opening, which declares, “Odi et amo,” I hate and I love?
4. Odyssey, Homer
of all the epic poems, this one remains a favorite. We’re all familiar with the trials of Odysseus and the cold gaze of the gods, but every single read illuminates more about this text: the simultaneous respect and diminishment bestowed upon women, the imposed Greek value of restraint, the narrator’s judgment of Odysseus. Of course, there’s also a cameo from our dear sorceress with a penchant for swine, which paved the way for another brilliant piece of literature, Madeline Miller’s "Circe".
