RANKING MY FAVORITE CLASSICAL WORKS
1. Medea, Euripides
The original story of the original femme fatale. Medea knew what she wanted and how to get it (although she did take her revenge a bit too far). Euripides was ahead of his time on this one—although men were still portraying women in Greek theater, the author gave us modern readers a sharp, witty, brutal commentary into the intersection of misogyny and xenophobia in Greek society.
2. Heroides, Ovid
A collection of letters from mythological women to the men who wounded them, this text gave a voice to those whose narratives were often told only as afterthoughts. It also includes the stories of some of my personal favorite characters, including Dido, Medea, and Ariadne.
