Remember the Turkeys
Aquila Simmons, OJCL 2nd VP, Wellington
In the JCL, we pride ourselves on our sense of family, love of the
classics, and our commitment to service. But in the joy of studying
ancient Greece and Rome with each other, it is easy for the third of
those to get lost. I nd it is always important to stop and remember
the signi cance and impact of service in our lives and others. I went to
my rst service event in seventh grade and helped hand out turkeys to
families just before thanksgiving. It was astonishing to realize what a
difference a few hours of my day could make in other people’s lives.
That day I met Will Emory, then current Parliamentarian and former
Central Gubernator; he told me how he used to organize events like the
one we were at as part of his job as Guber for some organization I
had never heard of. I promptly forgot the name of both his job and the
organization he worked for, but I remembered the smile he had on his
face when talking about the events he had helped make a reality. I
remembered the touching, genuine, happiness he had found in his
commitment to others, a happiness I had only just discovered.
