Rome in the Spring
Spring was a lively season in ancient Rome. It was a celebration of new life, blossoms, and fertility. During this season, Rome was anything but quiet and the city was abuzz with several spring-time festivals. Four holidays were celebrated during the spring months: Quinquatria, Cerealia, and Parilia.

On March 19th many Romans celebrated Quinquatria in honor of the goddes Minerva. The four days following the festival were filled with gladitorial competitions in order to honor the goddess of wisdom and warfare. This meant the festival lasted 5 days total, on the first day, no blood was shed, leaving the last 4 up to the gladiators.
