Summit Country Day

Joseph Delamerced

On February 4, SCD Latin hosted the 20th Annual Summit Latin Certamen. We had a great time meeting new people and reconnecting with old friends. The Summit teams were able to place in the finals for all levels, with our Novice team coming in 2nd, our Intermediate team achieving 1st, and our Advanced team finishing 2nd. Editor Lynn Ahrens even graced us with her presence at the event.

In celebration of Catholic Schools Week, the Latin Club also led a Latin Mass. Not only did students read passages entirely in the Latin language, but the priest present also led the congregation in Latin as well. Programs were printed out with an English translation next to the Latin text so that non-Latin students would be able to follow along.

After days of working on club projects and individual projects, Summit went to OJCL State Convention in February. It was so much fun, and we had a great time thanks to all the hard work the state chairs and Board put in.

Efforts to increase our membership also went unbelievably well, and we were able to add 11 more members to our delegation. Summit came out on top with a 1st place overall finish thanks to a huge lift from the new members in the Novice level.

We've also attended several service events throughout the year. Just a few weeks after State Convention, we went to Matthew 25 Ministries to help organize supplies to be sent to local orphanages.

After the service event, the officers went to the nearby Smashburger and shared a meal together. As Ryan Burns puts it, the burgers were “top tier food.”

Finally, our Latin Club has been active on social media. Inspired by the @ohiojcl account on Instagram, we have made our own account: @scdlatin. We encourage you to follow, as we frequently post the legendary Mr. Dean.

Indian Hill

Sara Zandvakili

This year, Indian Hill Latin Club had a great year filled with Certamen and fun events. Our year started of with toga bowling at Madison bowl, where Norman, Charlie, and Ajax made some sweet strikes. Over Halloween, we painted pumpkins in the style of red and black figure vases, creating some grade A graphic arts projects (too bad they wouldn’t last long). Later on, our club learned the art of quill pen making and scribed our favorite Latin phrases in ink. As state convention approached, we worked hard to make graphic art projects and our club banner. Our Latin Club placed 3rd overall per capita and had two candidates run for elected office positions. We’re very proud to have Hanna Zandvakili representing our local chapter on the state level as South Gubernator. Over spring break, the Latin department took students on a trip to Italy and France. To end the year, Indian Hill Latin Club will be holding a children’s book drive during National Classics Week and our end of the year awards ceremony for NLE and NLHS awards. Our club is so thankful to have such dedicated and inspiring teachers. Thanks for another great year!
