Pompeii : The Exhibit

Last summer , the Cincinnati Museum Center held an exhibition on Pompeii !
On August 24th , 79 A . D ., the city of Pompeii underwent the eruption of Mount Vesuvius . After the eruption , the city was covered in at least 19 feet of ash and debris . In the 1700s , the city was finally unearthed . Now marked as a UNESCO World Heritage Site , the region ' s excavation has raised archeological significance . While nature destroyed many , it also preserved Roman life , including the streets , some homes , and even human bodies ! The area shows many details of what a day as a Roman looks like , ranging from bathhouses to amphitheaters to bakeries . At this exhibition , the museum presented 150 artifacts in an attempt to “ tell the tale of a city hidden from view and forgotten for centuries ”. A wide variety of media was used to create a realistic sense of life in the past .
Traditional displays like an introductory theater and authentic artifacts like armor and furniture were shown . Additionally , a 4D eruption theater was simulated to illustrate the impact of the eruption ( covering the smell of noxious gasses and the feeling of extreme heat ). Most importantly , an atrium from a Roman villa was reproduced ! All in all , this was an awesome opportunity for field trips and immersive experiences of the past for locals in the area ! Going to the gallery also brought many sweet memories of Grumio and Caecilius from their early Latin learning years !
