Do you have any new business ventures?
I have a movie coming out at the top of next year. I filmed a pilot with Bentley Evans, who is the creator of Martin and the Jamie Foxx Show. I shot a TV pilot with him called Woman To Woman, for the OWN Network. They are editing that right now and we are just waiting to see if that is a go.
What is the premise of Woman To Woman?
It’s Girlfriends meets Living Single. It’s basically about four girlfriends coming together and creating an online company. They know each other from high school and they moved to LA from New York and created this company for women by women. You will see the trials of our relationship. It’s very funny.
When did you decide to go natural?
I was wearing wigs. I have been growing my sisterlocks under the wig. I would braid them down and wear the wigs. I did not necessarily like the in-between stages. I would wear them occasionally. I was not photographed with them. I have actually been growing them for about two years. My hair has never grown so fast; I should have locked my hair years ago. It is so healthy and it adapted to it so easily, as if it was supposed to be locked.
Do you have any tips for young up and coming female comedians?
Get on stage as often as possible. Write every single day. Study the greats. I look at it all day; I listen to it on Pandora all day. You have to train your brain to start thinking, funny, funny, funny. Anything is a possible joke. Look for the funny; if you are having a conversation and people are laughing, you can use that as a joke. Something is always a joke.
What is next for the Torrei Hart Brand?
A standup tour, for sure, talking about my life and where I am now. I want to get Skimpy Mixers added to more stores and helping that brand grow even more. I have a book that I just finished and I am doing the cover shoot for that very soon. I am focused on my acting, standup and being a mother.
How do you balance being a mom and your work life?
I have a great support system. I include the kids in a lot. I am with them four days out of the week, the time is split, and then they go with their father for three days. When he has them, I get a lot done, when they’re here with me I am able to be with them, and when they are asleep I get work done. I have a good balance.
"I am focused on my acting, standup and being a mother."
"I have a good balance."
