THE 3 STATES OF INERTIA:
3. The Inclined
The third state is where you feel ‘inclined’.
This is where your thinking is positively
reframed and implementation is all that
is required. So you’re in the ‘ready, aim...’
but no fire zone.
Some people may remain in the inclined
state for a while, citing all sorts of excuses as
to why they haven’t taken the first steps.
Often it’s a perceived lack of motivation that
causes us to procrastinate or wait for the
‘perfect conditions’ before taking action.
As Nike says ‘Just Do It’. If you’re at the
point where you’re inclined, then all you
need to do is get started and take some
action. Accept that whatever has
happened in the past is just that – in the
past. Refocus on the here and now, and
you can then move forward and into a
positive future.
Remember, it’s harder to unlearn a bad
habit than to learn a new one – habits are
typically formed somewhere around the
21 to 30-day mark of repetition. By
repeating rituals, you can expect new
neural pathways in your brain to develop,
allowing you to further ramp it up.
Keep those going for a few months and
expect transformative thinking regarding
previously negative behaviours.
4. The Invincible
This state sits in the top right quadrant and
is where we’re aiming. It’s where you’re
loving your work, feeling energetic in your
day, experiencing great relationships, and
you’re making a positive contribution. It’s a
state of flourishing and can permeate your
career, health and life. When you’re in this
state you are able to experience continued
success, and embolden others to do the
same for themselves.
You can start to see how a good plan
based on sound advice, and action are
the key steps in getting people through
the different stages of inertia and towards
invincibility.
By identifying where you’re at now and
employing strategies depending on which
stage you’re in, it is possible to move
towards this state. You’ll know you’ve
arrived because everything in your life will
typically ‘click’, and the sense of
happiness you’ll feel in response is
something you can then carry throughout
your life like a badge of honour.
Unfortunately, many people struggle in
aspects of their lives and most of the
time they become paralysed by
possibility. There’s so much conflicting
information in the media about what job
you should have in order to be successful,
where you should live to best bring up
your family, what to eat to be healthy,
and the list goes on. It’s no wonder
people might be indecisive or accepting
of where they are right now in the status
quo – both are potentially harmful
mindsets that result in no action.
Movement from all quadrants towards the
top right is possible, but we need to know
how to move from the inertia states and
inevitable fail cycles they create, to
achieve lasting success for real change.
