BLACK MASS Johnny Depp in gong winning form with this gangster tale That looks a bit like… what? It is? Wowzer! ohnny Depp’s become best known for doing quirky comedy in recent years. From the Pirates of the Caribbean series to more niche comedies like moustachioed Mortdecai, he’s avoided playing serious parts. But Black Mass looks set to change all that in the very best of ways. Make no mistake, this is a proper, grown-up crime drama. Focussing on the true story of Whitey Bulger, the most infamous violent criminal in South Boston’s history, Depp puts in a turn that is frankly intimidating and unnerving in equal measure, with the underlying charm that saw Whitey becoming the godfather of the Irish Mob. Check out the trailer to see exactly how scary Depp’s made the character, and to marvel at his self-inflicted male pattern baldness. All in all this looks brilliant, and we’ve yet to even mention the awesome Benedict Cumberbatch! J That looks a bit like... what? It is? Wowzer! THE LAST WITCH HUNTER Vin Diesel looks to finally have something good that doesn’t involve cars Vin Diesel swaps motors for magic and beards 8 odeon.co.uk e’ll be up front about this: we like Vin Diesel, but he’s never really managed to strike a chord with us in anything other than the franchise behemoth of the Fast and Furious series (OK, and Guardians of the Galaxy!). So we always hold out hope for him whenever something that isn’t that comes along, and this looks like being just the film to take him from behind the wheel. Diesel is Kaulder, an immortal witch W hunter who’s been fighting evil across the globe for centuries, after the baddest of all witches stole his family away and cursed him. Kaulder managed to slay his nemesis, but now she’s back, resurrected and looking for revenge. This should be a cracking fantasy ride, that we’re hoping manages to avoid driving down the cringey road that the likes of Van Helsing have been down. Come on Vin, buddy, we’re rooting for you.
