oana is a computer-animated musical
M
action adventure starring newcomer Auli’i
Cravalho as spirited female navigator Moana,
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson (Central
Intelligence) as Hawaiian demigod Maui
and Jemaine Clement (What We Do in the
Shadows) as Tamatoa, an evil 50-foot crab.
Directors John Musker and Ron Clements
came up with the idea for the film after trying
and failing to secure the rights to Terry
Pratchett’s bestselling Discworld novel, Mort.
Set in ancient Oceania, the story sees a young
girl (Moana) setting sail for a fabled island,
along the way joining forces with a legendary
– but reluctant – mythical hero (Maui).
Moana is set to be Disney’s 12th official ‘princess’
and her name means ‘ocean’ or ‘sea’ in Maori.
If Moana composer Lin-Manuel Miranda
wins an Academy Award for the film, he will
become one of only three people to be awarded
an Oscar, a Pulitzer, an Emmy, a Grammy and
a Tony. Keep your fingers crossed for him.
