SPY
The McCarthy Era
The rise and rise
of Melissa…
Gilmore Girls (2000-2007)
The first role that won Melissa
McCarthy fans was as the bubbly
chef Sookie St James in this teenfriendly series. More TV roles
followed, including sitcom Mike &
Molly, before cinema beckoned.
Bridesmaids (2011)
Teaming with Paul Feig for her first
big-screen triumph, McCarthy played
the foul-mouthed Megan and
shocked the world with her infamous
upset-tummy trauma. Unforgettable.
The Heat (2013)
Her first major co-starring role
(alongside a hilarious Sandra Bullock)
saw her playing another foul-mouthed
character, this time a Boston cop
fighting a drug lord.
Ghostbusters (2016)
A lead role in Tammy last year,
followed by this month's Spy, are
simply tasters of what could be
McCarthy's biggest hit yet: the new,
all-female Ghostbusters film. Who ya
gonna call?

elicit a profound sense of
empathy and support.”
Thrust from an office job into a
dangerous world of criminals,
fights and explosions, you'd be
forgiven for thinking that Susan would
find herself out of her league. As it turns
out, however, she's a natural. “Susan’s always
had ability, and is great technically and tactically,
but she lacked confidence,” says McCarthy. “She
discovers talents she didn’t know she had!”
The actress herself also learned a few things
while filming, as her character does everything
from take part in a moped chase to dangling
from a helicopter. “It's the most physically taxing
thing I’ve ever done,” she points out. “Running,
jumping, falling… I’ve cracked my head, I have
cuts and bruises.
At the end of the
day I look like I fell
down an elevator
shaft…But I wear
those wounds and
thrown discs with a
bit of pride!”
See McCarthy
earn all those
bruises when Spy
opens 5 June.
