Watch the trailer The BFG TBC Roald Dahl’s classic kids’ novel gets the big-screen treatment – and we mean BIG! DIRECTOR Steven Spielberg STARRING Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill, Bill Hader The books of Roald Dahl lend themselves well to the silver screen. To date, we’ve had live-action versions of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, Danny the Champion of the World and The Witches, to name but a few. Now it’s the turn of Dahl’s 1982 children’s classic The BFG. Directed by Steven Spielberg (Jurassic Park) and starring Bridge of Spies’ Mark Rylance in the role of the Big Friendly Giant, this epic adventure sees a young orphan named Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) discovering the existence of giants after gobblefunk glossary 22 JULY Snozzcumber A type of vegetable Frobscottle A type of fizzy drink Trogglehumper A really nasty dream Fleshlumpeater A really nasty giant Whoopsy-splunkers Something marvellous Human beans Human beings a 24-foot individual with huge ears and his own language (see glossary) plucks her from her dormitory during the witching hour. This extraordinary creature takes Sophie to giant country, where she encounters child-eating men at least twice as tall as The BFG. With the help of her new larger-than-life friend, can Sophie save Britain’s youngsters from being gobbled up? The BFG was adapted to great success in 1989 as an animated production starring Only Fools and Horses’ David Jason. Will this live-action version prove as whoopsy-splunkers? With Spielberg at the helm, you can bet your house on it. We’re looking forward to this one ‘enormously’. odeon.co.uk 21
