BUCKTAIL SCHOOL YEAR HIGHLIGHTS
School is back in swing this fall, and the halls at the Bucktail campus are filled with eager students ready to change history and highlight the small town of Renovo, Pennsylvania.
Students in Mr. Day’ s Ecology class, along with the BHS Student Government, continue to work toward the huge historical goal of changing PA ' s state fossil to the Hynerpeton. Discovered in 1993 by Ted Daeschler and Neil Shubin, the roughly 365-million-year-old fossil is the first of its kind. The current state fossil is the Trilobite, not unique to one specific area; many other states claim the trilobite as their own. Elizabeth Whitty, Community Development & Housing Coordinator, sparked the idea of change as a way to celebrate America’ s 250th anniversary. Bucktail students have gained the support of Superintendent Frank Redmon and many community leaders. The proposal to change the state fossil to the Hynerpeton was introduced to the PA House State Government as Bill 1554 on June 4, 2025. Students are slated to visit the Capitol soon to continue their tremendous effort.
Another historic highlight at Bucktail is the continued success of the girls ' tennis team. For the past 18 years, the Bucktail Girls ' Varsity Tennis program, led by Alison and Dan Heiser, has been a remarkable story of determination and success. Most Bucktail players come into the program with little to no tennis experience before 9th or 10th grade, often learning the sport while already facing tough competition. Over the last 18 years, they have risen to the challenge. The 2025 team is no exception. Off to a fast 7-1 start, they are once again proving that hard work and team spirit overcome obstacles. Leading the way are seniors Eva Sockman, Kendall Wagner, Lola English, and McKenna Bissman, whose leadership and steady play anchor the team. Alongside them are a talented group of quick learners and competitive underclassmen; Carrie Ditty, Kelsie Wagner, Riley Salizzoni, Kaitlin Paloskey, and Olivia Henderson. This mix of veteran leadership and emerging talent is keeping Bucktail’ s proud tennis tradition alive. They are poised to continue their legacy of strong, competitive play in District IV.
As these students try to change history, others are gearing up for the historical tradition of the 76th Flaming Foliage Festival in October. Recognized as a PA State Festival with the largest parade in the state, roughly 30,000 visitors are expected in the small town of roughly 1,100 residents. The festival has grown exponentially since 1949, originally taking place below the Hyner bridge, and is now a major part of Bucktail High School tradition. Since its start, seven Bucktail seniors have won the coveted title of Flaming Foliage Queen. This year, senior Eva Sockman hopes to become number eight. Hayleigh Dent, Emiliana DeMarte, Laura Ransom, Lola English, Kendall Wagner, and McKenna Bissman will all serve as hostesses of the historic event. Also making history, Makenna Stone, will represent Bucktail at the 2026 Laurel Festival. The Homecoming football game and crowning of Homecoming King & Queen will happen on Friday, October 10, at 7 pm.
