Description : The Nova Duck Tolling Retriever has the longest name in the list of breeds recognized by the AKC , but is actually the smallest of all Retrievers . Duck tollers are built for swimming and have webbed feet like many other waterfowl hunting dogs . This breed ' s water-repellent double coat is often red or golden red , but can also be yellowish beige with white markings on their chest .
Temperament : Duck Tollers are active , intelligent , playful , and affectionate . Often mistaken for mini Golden Retrievers , they are not as outgoing , and can be wary of strangers . They need proper socialization to become a well-behaved family member , but are good with children and other animals . They do have a high prey drive , though , so they aren ’ t the best dogs for homes with small animals , such as rabbits and hamsters . Duck Tollers are assertive , but usually not aggressive . They are very sweet-natured , and thrive on human companionship . One of their most endearing traits is their grin , which looks remarkably like a human smile and makes them even more lovable . They are among the smartest of breeds , and should be provided with mental stimulation to keep them from getting bored and destructive . Duck Tollers thrive on having a job to do . They are eager to please , so they are relatively easy to train . They make an excellent exercise buddy !
Average Height / Weight : Approximately 35 - 50 pounds , and 17 - 21 inches tall .
Health Issues : Generally a healthy breed , Duck Tollers can be prone to certain health conditions , such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy , Addison ' s Disease , Hip Dysplasia , and Thyroid issues .
Exercise : Duck Tollers require daily exercise . Regular walks are a must . Agility and obedience training are excellent options for these high energy dogs . Swimming is also a favorite activity . A large yard or property to run and play is ideal .
Life Expectancy : 12 -14 years .
Grooming : This breed should be brushed every few days to keep its coat from getting matted and to manage shedding . They should be thoroughly rinsed after going for a swim .
