Answer : This is a controversial topic , as many people feel that it is completely unnatural , and is risky for your dog or cat , while others feel it ' s just a fun thing to do for specific occasions , such as Halloween . Consider and research the issue thoroughly , and if you do decide to go ahead with dying your pet ' s fur , be sure to only use safe dyes , such as food coloring , which can be safely ingested . There are specific dyes formulated for pets , but you should still read the label to make sure there are no harmful ingredients if swallowed . DO NOT USE HAIR DYE INTENDED FOR HU- MANS ! Not only are they too acidic for a dog or cat ' s skin , they also contain ingredients that are harm that any animal can be sensitive to the ingredients you put on their fur , and reactions can range from mild skin irritation to a severe allergic episode , which could require veterinary care . You must also be extremely careful not to get any of the dye you use in your pet ' s eyes , ears , or mouth . And if your dog or cat does not enjoy grooming in the first place , you can bet that dying their fur will cause them a great deal of stress . If you are intent on decorating your pet for the holidays , a cute outfit may be preferable . If you still desire a dye job , it is usually best to seek out a professional groomer who is experienced with this type of thing , and can better ensure safety for your precious pet !
