Curriculum and Innovation Updates
Keystone Central School District is thrilled to announce updates to its curriculum for the upcoming 2024 / 2025 academic year , aimed at creating engaging and rigorous educational experiences .
Empowering Educators with the Science of Reading :
Recognizing the pivotal role of teachers in student success , KCSD has prioritized professional learning in the Science of Reading for the last four years . The Science of Reading is a research-based approach to teaching reading focusing on how the brain learns to read , emphasizing the importance of phonemic awareness , phonics , fluency , vocabulary , and comprehension . The training equips teachers with evidence-based strategies to support literacy development , so every student receives targeted instruction tailored to their needs .
Transforming English Language Arts with CKLA and Amplify ELA :
As part of its commitment to providing English Language Arts ( ELA ) instruction aligned to the Science of Reading , KCSD is rolling out two cutting-edge programs to teachers in meeting the needs of all students . For grades K-5 , the district will implement the Core Knowledge Language Arts ( CKLA ) program . CKLA is known for its systematic approach to literacy , integrating high-interest science and social studies content to enhance students ' background knowledge and vocabulary . This approach not only strengthens reading and writing skills , but also fosters a deeper understanding of the world around them . For middle school students in grades 6-8 , Keystone Central has selected Amplify ELA , an innovative program designed to create a passion for reading and writing . Amplify ELA ' s interactive digital platform and comprehensive curriculum are crafted to meet state standards while encouraging critical analysis and creative expression among students . Supporting Students with MTSS :
KCSD continues to implement and expand MTSS ( Multi-Tiered Systems of Support ) to address students ' needs in academics , behavior , and social-emotional wellness . MTSS is a framework that provides varying levels of support tailored to each student ' s individual needs . This comprehensive approach ensures that every student receives the appropriate support to thrive academically , behaviorally , and emotionally , thereby fostering success in both school and life .
KCSD Profile of a Learner :
The curriculum enhancements that are underway , and will continue to be developed , aim to keep the KCSD Profile of a Learner at the center . Projects and assessments will directly assess these attributes , ensuring that students develop not only academic proficiency , but also the attributes and skills essential for student success in the 21st century .
