SVRCS RECEIVES NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY EXCELLENCE AWARD
The National Honor Society is one of the most recognized student leadership organizations in American high school . To be inducted as a member your school ' s chapter is to promote the four pillars of scholarship , leadership , service and good character among students . SVRCS members of this distinguished organization are excellent examples of these pillars .
The chapter not only demonstrates leadership in academics , but also by being in the forefront of the school and community , by exemplifying honesty , reliability , resourcefulness , and high regard for others . It is all of these qualities that the group possesses together that helped earn the National Honor Society Award of Overall Excellence . SVRCS was one of twenty schools to earn such an award out of 17,000 chapters in the United States .
To earn this national honor , the NHS members submitted an essay about how they exemplify the four pillars of the organization ' s standards . When describing character within the membership , they write , “ Our school embodies the subject of Character through our actions in and out of school . We strive to positively impact the world around us by leading courageously in service to our community . Our NHS members are known for their integrity , honesty , and sense of responsibility , understanding the importance of doing the right thing , even when it is difficult . We are dedicated to upholding the highest standards of behavior , both in and out of the classroom , and remain committed to making a difference in the world , despite the challenges we face .”
One of the requirements of scholarship for the SVRCS chapter is that each member maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 , which is equivalent to a B grade , in order to be considered for induction and throughout membership . “ Because our school ranges on the smaller side with only 500 students k-12 , we have a lot of “ overlapping ” students . This means we have students that are in multiple extracurriculars at one time . With that being said , the students that are in the Sugar Valley chapter must learn a balance between school work , extracurriculars , and getting involved in the community ,” the essay reads . Showing it ’ s not uncommon for these students to have high expectations from themselves and the community while serving as role models to the future of membership of the chapter .
Jodie Walizer has been the chapter ’ s advisor for many years . The students could not be led by a better representative of balance , as she is the advisor of several different organizations throughout the school . Through her leadership , these students will represent the four pillars of the National Honor Society as their life ' s journey continues on .
