ESY Summer Adventures
The Extended School Year ( ESY ) program at Bellefonte Area School District has been exploring the Centre County area , learning many great skills , and volunteering their services . Below is a list of the fun adventures they have accomplished during these past summer months .
In early July , the ESY students explored Buffalo Run Farms , the PSU Horse Barns , and the Royal Pet Resort . Students were able to pet the horses and pigs at the Buffalo Run Farms . Professor Eagn and his family gave the students a tour of the Penn State horse barns . The students absolutely loved seeing the horses . At the Royal Pet Resort , the students participated in a job shadow . They learned about the responsibilities of working with pets and caring for them . They also learned about the qualities employers look for when hiring employees . It was a very informative trip for the students . They truly appreciated the time that the Royal Pet Resort employees gave them .
Later in July , ESY students traveled to Penn State ’ s Frost Entomological Museum with Mrs . Moody and Mrs . Lee . They learned about invasive species , how insect specimens are collected , and how insects play a vital role in our ecosystem . It was a very interesting trip for these students !
Lastly , the ESY students took a trip to Goodwill . They were given a tour of the store and then volunteered their time to help organize clothing . This trip helped students to understand the importance of volunteering , as well as the amount of effort that it takes to keep a store running well .
Ms . Allison D ’ Ambrosia was one of the teachers that helped with the summer ESY program and she absolutely loved her experience . “ This program is a great opportunity for kids to not only continue learning over the summer , but get some great peer interaction and build their friendships among peers . With such a small group , they get very individualized learning tailored to their specific needs , as well as some time to just enjoy the company of a small group ! They also may get to reconnect with teachers they had when they were younger , which is always a bonus . It really is a great way to kick off the day well ," D ' Ambrosia said of the program .
