Why Rise on Your Campus ?

On College Campuses

One Billion Rising is a global movement to end violence against women and girls ( cisgender and transgender ), gender expansive people , and the Earth . From February through April , we rise – in countries across the world – to shine a light on the rampant impunity and injustice that survivors most often face and to celebrate the fact that we have not been defeated by this violence . V-Day ’ s legacy on college campuses has been pivotal in creating a widespread dialogue about reforming sexual assault policies .
Why Rise on Your Campus ?
Students have the power to drive significant change and create safer , more inclusive environments by rising together against gender-based violence . A staggering one in five women in college experience sexual assault 1 and 23.1 % percent of transgender , genderqueer , and nonconforming ( TGQN ) students experience sexual assault 23 . Women and TGQN students of color are particularly affected by alarming levels of harassment , discrimination and assault . These statistics highlight the urgent need for collective action . By Rising together , students can support survivors , challenge institutional failures , and work towards ending the epidemic of campus sexual violence .
Risings are also an invitation to engage in national and global solidarity . Issues such as reproductive oppression , racial and LGBTQ + violence , worker ’ s rights , sexual slavery and trafficking , war and genocide , and our climate crisis demand collective action . Rising in solidarity with national and global movements highlights our interconnectedness and the importance of organizing from a holistic and inclusive perspective .
