spirit . We can , as the student-poet behind “ Our Hardware Store ” suggests , look closely at what might typically go “ unseen by passersby ,” such as shelves of screws and hooks where “ memories are ingrained ,” the individual pixels of a pastel self-portrait , or a seemingly simple rock on a hill .
One reason I value the process of assembling each new volume of Obelisk is that it entails a long look at the wonder and beauty that Saint David ’ s boys have taken time to see , relish , record , and render in their own work . Along with the faculty and alumni who collaborated in selecting this year ’ s published pieces , I was struck by the depth and range of our students ’ submissions . The creative and critical thinking our boys have been doing spans multiple genres and media , often within a single project . In fact , we have decided to add a new feature to our journal this year : interdisciplinary art and writing , including artwork generated through mathematical equations , using the Desmos graphing calculator application ; and stories written in Spanish , with accompanying English translations .
We hope you will take your time exploring this sample of the work Saint David ’ s boys generate throughout their school year . This publication is a product of the atmosphere we are all fortunate to experience every day : a collaborative community of students , teachers , staff , and families , together looking to keep the wonder and beauty of our world in focus .
