Editor ’ s Note
“ We can ’ t really see the air around us , but if you take a moment to just look up , you can observe the wonder and beauty of our atmosphere , and what it does for us every day . You just have to look up .”
The lines above are a snippet of wisdom from two Grade Six boys , partnering on their Digital Universe Field Study science project . I love this graceful expression of how easily we can learn to see more of what our world has to offer . To recognize what we might be taking for granted , these young writers remind us , we can simply “ take a moment to just look up .” I also love how their collaborative D . U . F . S . script blends their perspectives , balances their voices , and brings together the two seemingly disparate disciplines of research-based science and creative writing in order to broaden our view of “ the wonder and beauty ” in the universe .
Saint David ’ s boys engage in a lot of thoughtful looking — across disciplines and in every direction . Through the pages of this year ’ s Obelisk , we can join them in looking out over mountain ranges , nightscapes , and ocean waves , considering the personal conquests and dreams that these settings evoke . We can look back at revolutionary artists , uncommon soldiers , and unlikely heroes who have turned strife into striving to find new ways through seemingly impossible challenges . We can look from shadowy forests to sunlit studios , from tech labs to athletic arenas , from present experiences to uncertain futures , and appreciate the reach of human imagination , skill , and
