off this ship and stretch my legs . Everyone on the ship grabbed their bags and put on their suits . This would be the first time we had left the ship in almost three months . The captain , whose name was James , walked outside with us and our parents . The landing pad was elevated about three feet off the ground . It looked abandoned , and nobody came out of the base to greet us . Crates had been tipped over and containers of fuel had been spilled on the floor . “ Are we sure it ’ s safe here ?” I asked . “ Even if it isn ’ t , we have to go inside . We can only survive for a couple more hours in our suits . This is our only choice ,” explained the captain .
I decided to get a good look at the surface of Mars . I peered over the railing and took a long look at the red , barren wasteland that I would be living on for the rest of my life . There were no plants or wildlife . Just a rocky surface and some small hills . I was tremendously disappointed .
Eventually , we started walking towards the big door that led to the interior of the base . “ I think this place is abandoned ,” said my dad . “ Yeah , probably ,” replied the captain . The doors to the base swung open , and the seven of us walked inside . As we suspected , there was nobody there . It looked just as abandoned as the landing pad . “ At least there aren ’ t any French soldiers in here ,” said the captain . “ Can I take off my helmet ?” I asked . “ No , I don ’ t think so ,” he replied . He elaborated , “ Somehow , the oxygen systems have stopped working . We can ’ t stay here for much longer . We don ’ t have much oxygen
