H AYLEY G ILLESPIE It's a new year and so a great time to try something NEW! And this gorgeous city of ours has a host of things you can get involved with. Take the Cairns Art Gallery for instance. Aside from obviously visiting the Gallery and taking classes, which range from fine art classes to yoga, you can also be a volunteer. You can donate as much or as little time as your schedule permits. Apart from being a valued member of the Gallery, museum or group you work with, you will also be helping your community, making new friends, learning new skills and generally have a lot of fun. This could be a wonderful thing to add to your resume too. Volunteers literally “make things happen” that otherwise wouldn't be possible. Joining a cultural group is another way to dip into this and experience all the colour of culture (and the delicious food) first hand without having to wait around at the airport. Talking of which, Chinese New Year is here again this February showcasing many events during the period from February 5th to February 18th. 2019 is the Year of the Pig, and Cairns is set to come alive during this week. There will be so many free events and a street festival, all packed full of art and cultural delights that would love to see you there. If volunteering isn’t your thing this year, then why not look out for an array of art classes coming up. The Cairns Art Gallery are providing more and more diverse classes of adults and children all the time. The best Cairns Regional Council take volun- place to look out for what’s new is on teers also.
