the need for such leadership to rise to the best in musicianship and communicating the message of the music . I ’ ll never forget this man who knew what the best was and how to get there . He was indeed a gentleman of high expectation and grace .

When I think of Brian , I see the quintessential English gentleman , working steadily with perfection on his craft as a composer and an editor . I can ’ t help but think of our working relationship these past twenty years . Brian was very kind with me especially when I first started in the position as Editor . Brian ’ s editing was very precise as he was himself as a person . He taught and led by example , and I soon knew what was expected of me as Editor .
We worked on many projects together , from the American Band Journal to one off projects . My favorite projects with Brian were long term projects – such as Carolers ’ Favorites , and the Star Search Series books – the vocal book and the first brass solo book . These took a lot of time and energy from both of us . We were on the phone daily for months . We came to know and respect each other in our work during these times .
However , my favorite memories of Brian were the kind , fatherly chats we had to catch up on life together . Among other things , Brian was a deep , spiritual man who loved his God . We had some great chats about that . I will miss him dearly in many respects , as a compositional voice , as a colleague and as a friend . We are the richer for having been able to be in your presence and to play and listen to your marvelous music . Thank you , Brian , for leaving a bit of yourself with us . Rest in Peace my friend .
