Equity Matters “The time is always right to do what is right.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. At Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, we value the inherent worth of each student, staff member, and instructor. We acknowledge that we share many similarities with one another yet also have our own unique backgrounds, experiences, needs, skills and stories. We see our differences as something to be respected and learned from. This valuing of each person’s inherent worth means that we strive to treat all others with respect, compassion, value, and fairness. Goal 4 of our Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Five-Year Plan indicates that we create an educational and work environment that reflects, appreciates, and celebrates the diverse society and community in which we live and one that creates a climate for the success of every person by appreciating the uniqueness that they bring to NWTC. Thus, we…     Implement faculty and staff in-service programs, professional development activities, mentoring, and student orientation programs to promote cultural, sex, and disability awareness and sensitivity.     Integrate the history, culture, accomplishments, and contributions of minorities, women, and the disabled into curricula at each WTCS district.     Ensure that cultural competency is practiced at every campus. Business Case for Diversity Diversity is an intrinsic value at NWTC. The benefits are measurable in ways such as greater knowledge and awareness of cultural difference; motivation for improved personal and professional relationships; and an elevated cohesive work environment. The following goals, from the College’s Future 2018 Statement of Strategic Directions, set the tone for the emphasis placed on cultural diversity and the vision to make sure all of our students have an opportunity for success: (1) build a diverse employee base that reflects the student body, (2) work towards having the diversity of the community reflected in the student body, and (3) decrease the achievement gap among ethnic groups. To accomplish those goals, we must show authentic positive regard for everyone who touches our organization. 6
