• Speak Up: When approaching hikers or bikers from behind, speak calmly and clearly(“ Rider coming through” or“ Hello!”). This alerts the humans and helps identify you as a non-threat to the horses.
• The Red Ribbon Rule: If your horse is known to kick, tie a red ribbon in its tail. This is a universal signal for others to give you extra space.
• Pass with Care: When passing another group, always pass at a walk.
• Stay on the Path: Avoid“ cutting” switchbacks or riding off-trail. This causes erosion and can destroy local vegetation.
• Leave No Trace: If you stop for a break, pack out all trash. If you are in a high-traffic or sensitive area, consider dispersing manure or kicking it off the main tread of the trail.
• Watering Etiquette: When crossing a stream, move downstream of where others might be drinking, and try to keep the horse moving to prevent them from pawing and eroding the stream bed.
