Enjoys a Weekend
Filled with Obstacle
Challenges

To NWHA member Taunya Simmons,
there is nothing better than
spending time with her beloved
TWH, Drifter. Though Taunya calls
Amazing Gaits Equestrian Center
home, she travels often with Drifter,
and together they compete in many
different events. From rail classes
to dressage to obstacle challenges,
Taunya really enjoys getting out and
going places with her horse. The
weekend of February 20 was no
different! This winter weekend found
both horse and rider participating in
one of their favorite events: trail and
arena obstacle challenges.
NWHA National News 24
The competition was hosted by Dawn
Thomas at Trails, Etc. in Midway, Al
which boasts miles of beautifully
maintained trails and natural water
crossings. More than 15 rider and
horse teams turned out for the
occasion. The weather was awesome
and the temperature perfect.
The event for this weekend included
a 6 mile trail ride with 6 natural
obstacles encountered throughout
the trail. There were also arena
obstacle challenges after the trail
rides on both Saturday and Sunday.
At this event, each obstacle judge
was given the option of choosing
a “judges pick” award at their
obstacle. A
judge’s pick can
be awarded for
anything the
judge sees as
commendable in
the horse/rider
team regardless
of whether the
obstacle was
completed
satisfactorily
or not. Taunya
and Drifter
were chosen
for a judges
pick award at
four different
obstacles on
each the four
rides they
participated in
that weekend.
