Daniel Twist N0384425 Abstract for Dissertation titled A critical analysis of the educational value of the outdoor and adventurous activities provided by Nottingham City Council Abstract This essay analyses and discusses the educational value of a local authority’s adventure team, a provider of outdoor and adventurous activities to the city. Making use of information gathered from young people attending the service for sessions, alongside my own knowledge of the industry and incorporating research from wider reading, I analyse the current service on an educational basis, before going on to discuss observations and improvements going forward. Throughout this research I find that the service has a number of potential areas for an educational benefit for young people attending sessions, however on the whole these are not being acted upon, with a greater educational impact being lost simply because it is not being pursued. Time constraints and an emphasis on one off, activity filled sessions take the emphasis away from what is a valuable educational tool which is not being used. The value of the service becomes increasingly clear throughout this piece, especially when put alongside the national curriculum, where clear links can be seen but are not currently being made, leading to a change being lost for the young people attending. It should be noted that all opinions are my own and not that of the Nottingham City Council or the Adventure Team.
