Fluorescent proteins and their applications
Abstract
Fluorescent proteins have become one of the most vital tools for use in clinical and biomedical
research. Fluorescent proteins have made it possible for real time monitoring of cells in vivo and in
vitro and enabled the visualisation of gene expression within living organisms. This review covers
some of the applications of fluorescent proteins within the bioindustry such as cancer cell imaging
and the methods with which optical fluorescence can be converted into scientific data. Future
Fluorescent proteins will be discussed with reference to new technologies that could displace
fluorescent proteins as an imaging technology.
