MOBILE PANTRY
PROGRAM
“It’s tough to make ends meet on my [social security]
check...This is a lot of help to my budget.”
-Mary Swan, Mobile Pantry Participant
NTFB’s Mobile Pantry program helps connect our neighbors with the
fresh produce and other groceries they need, particularly in areas that
may be food deserts or that lack traditional pantries.
Like a market on wheels, the Mobile Pantry program is a traveling
pantry that delivers nutritious food, including fresh produce and
refrigerated items, directly to communities with high needs.
The Food Bank saw great success with the start of the program
in FY16 — distributing more than 603,000 lbs. of food, 160,000 of
which was fresh produce. This is eqivilant to 133,333 nutritious meals
provided across 3 counties!
The trucks were purchased through grants from the Rotary Club
of Park Cities and Texas Capitol Bank, and the David M. Crowley
Foundation. The program also was the recipient of a $125,000 grant
from the Walmart Foundation to provide fresh produce to low income
communities in Dallas and Collin County.
NTFB’s goal is to continue to build the vital Mobile Pantry program
so that we can offer healthy food access across North Texas, and
ultimately promote nutrition for all of those that we serve.
The Mobile Food Pantry Program currently
feeds about 3,500 households.
