Seen & Heard How does it feel to be part of the national team? By Dennis Chew, Executive (Resort Bowl) Did you know that four of our very own NSRCC youth bowlers are part of the national team? We took some time to catch up with Brandon Ong, Cheah Ray Han, Jovan Chua and Xavier Teo. It gives me a chance to give back to a nation that has provided me with so many opportunities, and this motivates me to always give my best whenever I don our national colours. Having the opportunity to represent the nation while doing what I love, is something that I will cherish forever and not take for granted.” How has the training at NSRCC equipped you as a bowler? “NSRCC has great coaches who honed my physical and technical skills to a level that was recognised by the national team. Although I was already recruited to be part of the national team when I joined NSRCC, the Club’s training took me to the next level in terms of skill development. The Club also has in-house competitions, such as the Quarterly Medals and the Annual Bowling Championship, which help me to stay sharp and competitive during off season.” What is your best achievement so far? "First and foremost is the 2017 Sea Games Men's Team haul of five gold medals. I value this achievement the most due to the fact that it was Singapore’s first gold medal in 22 years for the particular event. What made it more special is that we were the underdogs going into the competition with an average age of 20.5 among the five of us, the youngest in the field. Our main focus was just on the process and we fought our hearts out along the way, so to see the results amounting to a gold medal at the end of it all was just surreal for all of us. Next is the 2019 SEA Games Men’s Singles bronze medal. This win was quite special for me on an individual level as this was my first adult major medal and I did it in a very elite field. I defeated big names such as the reigning World Champion, Malaysia’s Rafiq Ismail, as well as professional tour bowler, Thailand’s Yannaphon Larpapharat, to get to the podium. Thus, I take pride in accomplishing it."
