Dr. Christine Beaule has been
our chapter’s Faculty Advisor since
the fall of 2013. She is an Assistant
Professor in the Spanish and Latin
American Studies division of the
Department of Languages and Literatures of Europe and the Americas, Cooperating Graduate Faculty
with the Anthropology Department, and a member of the Honors
Program Faculty. She is an Andean
archaeologist whose research focuses on the impacts of long-distance
trade networks, cross-cultural contact, conquest, and colonialism in
both Prehispanic and Colonial Period Latin America. Since joining
the UH faculty in 2010, Dr. Beaule
has been increasingly drawn into
work on comparative colonialism;
her current research examines the
manifestations of colonialism in
both the Andes and the Philippines,
especially in domestic (household)
organization and religious art and
architecture. Her archaeological
research has focused largely on ancient households and village communities in highland Bolivia, but
she teaches inter-disciplinary courses about indigenous Latin American cultures, histories, and colonialism.
Dr. Beaule is passionate about
undergraduate education and research, and has worked hard to
support and facilitate independent
research projects designed and
conducted by undergraduate students at UH. She teaches Honors
classes about the research process,
discussion-focused seminars that
engage students in provocative and
hard questions about the world we
live in, and mentors many students
in their own research projects (including quite a few undergrads
who choose to do their research in
Bolivia under her guidance). Because of these interests in supporting undergraduates, Dr. Beaule has
been happy to serve as Faculty Advisor to the UHM chapter of NSCS,
and looks forward to helping us to
achieve our goals for many years
to come. If you would like to get in
touch with her, she can be reached
at Beaule@hawaii.edu.
