Phoenix Volleyball Rising: A Season of Growth and Grit
After several years of rebuilding, the Sugar Valley Phoenix volleyball program has made remarkable strides this season. With a current record of 3 – 13 and a 3rd place ranking out of seven teams in the 1A district, the improvement is undeniable- especially considering the team finished last in the standings each of the past four seasons.
This year’ s squad has shown heart, hustle, and steady progress in every match. Even in close losses, where most sets were decided by only two or three points, the Phoenix have proven they can compete with anyone in our classification. The team has also pushed opponents to five sets multiple times, earning valuable experience and even taking a set in five different matches that narrowly slipped away.
Leading the offensive charge are key hitters Jaelynn Walker and Marrin Clester, who continue to deliver power and consistency from the front row. Their leadership and determination have set the tone for the team’ s intensity and confidence.
Defensively, young libero Halen Martin has stepped up in a major way, showing maturity beyond her years with strong serve-receive play and fearless digs that keep rallies alive. Meanwhile, the setting duo of Lyla Breon and Sadie Martin have begun to find their rhythm late in the season- distributing the ball with improved timing, communication, and strategy that’ s helped the offense click down the stretch.
In the middle, younger players Harper Tressler, Marley Bickle, and Najiah Staton have continued to grow and contribute, bringing height, energy, and developing skill to the court. Their progress throughout the season has been a key factor in the team’ s overall improvement and depth.
On the JV side, captain Kohana Yamashita has shown strong leadership and initiative, motivating her teammates and bringing a positive, hardworking attitude to every practice and match. Her example has helped strengthen the culture and connection across all levels of the program.
While the win column doesn’ t fully capture the story, the Phoenix are clearly on the rise. Each close match, long rally, and shared huddle reflects a team that refuses to back down- a team that has grown tremendously in skill, chemistry, and belief.
From last place to a competitive force in the district, the Phoenix have risen- and the future looks bright.
