Bellefonte Area School District Remembers 9 / 11
Throughout the Bellefonte Area School District , teachers and students remember 9 / 11 in their buildings . Below are a few highlights of the day .
At Bellefonte Elementary , Miss Maranda Hanley ’ s fourth and fifth grade students started off their English Language Arts ( ELA ) class by reading a passage and looking at a timeline of the events that occurred on September 11 , 2001 . Afterwards , students created an art project of an illusion of a knelt soldier and “ Remember 9 / 11 .” The students really enjoyed completing the project and learning facts about why today is so important in our country .
At Marion-Walker Elementary , Mrs . Colleen DeFonzo ’ s fifth grade ELA class read the book , “ Fireboat : The Heroic Adventures of the John J . Harvey .” This book tells the true story of a retired NYC fireboat and its owners , and how they heroically sprang to action on September 11 , 2001 . Next , they talked about heroes , and had a discussion about who some of our local heroes are . Students were then invited to write a letter of gratitude to a person or group of people they consider a local hero . These letters will then be mailed to those chosen people !
At Bellefonte Area Middle School , Mr . Eric Himes has been highlighting a mini 9 / 11 lesson during his skills period- which is during the middle of the day . He begins with students sharing " Things I Know ," " Things I Think I Know ," and " What I Want To Know " at the beginning of the period . Mr . Himes has found that it is easier to answer the questions that the students have instead of providing them with loads of information . He then went through a brief slideshow with an overview video that explained the events of the day .
In all of the buildings , the principals spoke of the attacks at 8:46am , and the students and staff had a moment of silence to remember those who lost their lives that day . At the home cross county meet , sophomore Emma Burger shared a piece that she wrote to a crowd of fellow student athletes , parents , coaches , teachers , family , and friends about never forgetting this important day .
The students and staff of the Belle-fonte Area School District will continue to remember the events from that day .
